(Relaxnews)—The 50-year-old singer theorized that the tumor, known as a meningioma, was caused by her mobile phone, since it was located on the side of her head where she normally held her phone. “I say it’s in my cell phone area,” she said on the show. “And there are no doctors that will confirm that.” Last year, Crow admitted that she was worried she had an early onset of Alzheimer’s disease due to memory problems, such as forgetting lyrics to her hit songs while on stage. “I felt like I was starting to become mushy,” she said. “A couple of times I’d space on stage, forgot the lyrics and things, so I ended up getting a teleprompter.” “I do have the theory that it’s possible that it’s related to that because in those early, early days when I was promoting my first record, I did hours of phoners on the old archaic cell phones,” she said.
Brain surgeon Dr. Rahul Jandial told KTLA-5 in the US that there is no evidence that supports the theory. “While they say that more research is needed, it certainly makes us wonder: Is excessive cell phone use bad for your health?” questions health blog Blisstree. “Are you even the least bit wary? It’s a scary thought, for sure.” On Couric’s website, Dr. Gene Barnett from the Cleveland Clinic (Crow’s physician) noted that meningiomas are typically benign and often show up in women over 40. As far as why they occur, he said that ionizing radiations such as X-rays are to blame. “There is also a recent report—although not particularly well done—that suggests dental X-rays in children could be a contributing factor,” he said. “However, this has not been proven or established.”
